Six tips for people who are thinking of running for the first time

1) Grab a buddy or join a group – Running is always a little more fun and more motivating when you have someone to go with. Having people waiting keeps you from convincing yourself you don’t want to go. It also helps you work that little bit harder – so improvement will become more evident as time goes on.

2) Get the right pair of shoes. Getting the right type of shoe is key. Go to a reputable sports store and buy the right pair of shoes for you – will you be road running or trail running, what type of running style do you have, getting the right size shoe is key as every shoe brand is different. The staff should be able to help you with these questions and recommend the best shoe for you.

3) Run walk combo. It’s ok to walk when on a run! When you’re starting, a great strategy is to incorporate the run/walk combo. Maybe start with a 5 min run and 1 min walk – and build up from there. A great general rule is if you can’t have a conversation with someone when you’re running you are pushing too hard. Listen to your body, if you feel you need to walk then walk, if you feel good, then start running.

4) What to eat or drink before or during your run. If you’re going for a run, don’t eat anything 1.5 – 2 hours before. Your body needs the energy for your working muscles, make sure you’re not digesting anything because that will lead to stomach issues. Taking a water bottle with you is a good idea, you can choose to have a bladder in a small running backpack, or take just a hand-held bottle (that has a hand strap) which makes it easier to carry. Of course if you’re only running a couple of km’s you might not need to take anything – this is a personal decision you can experiment with.

5) Where are you going and what do you need?

Make sure to check a map before you go so you know the path, what to expect and where you will finish. Also if there are any extra things you need. For example if there is a great café at the end, take some cash for a drink or coffee, or maybe you need your octopus card to get the bus back home.

6) Don’t forget why!

It can be easy to get caught up in all the new things you might need to remember, take or do. In time they will become second nature – don’t worry. But most of all don’t forget why you’re there in the first place…breathe the air, chat with friends, explore new places in a new way…have fun!.
